June Advertising With The Glamorous Housewife

Well kittens, it is that time of month again! I want to make sure to invite all of you to advertise with The Glamorous Housewife. Thanks to Va-Voom Vintage, I have a cooler way to process the advertising. Isn't technology fantastic!

If you have a vintage shop, an Etsy store, a creative and enjoyable blog, or anything that might benefit a collection of women ages 25-50 who are clever, fashionable, and vintage inspired and are interested in style and the art of homemaking then this is a perfect place for you to have an ad. The Glamorous Housewife gets over 35 thousand hits a month, and due to being featured in Country Living magazine and House of Turquoise, I am currently getting over 3,000 hits a day, though I do expect that to taper off by the end of the month. So now is the time to get your ad on The Glamorous Housewife!

If you have any questions regarding the advertising such as image size, feel free to comment on this post or email me at theglamoroushousewife@gmail.com.

Inspiration: Mommy Calling Card Give-Away!

I need some mommy business cards. Have you ever heard of these? They are pure genius. Basically it has your name, phone number, and email on them and you hand them to people you just met- only instead of networking with corporate employees you are now making play dates and trying to figure out how you can pawn your kids off to other parents so you can have an hour to yourself! I jest, I jest! But seriously, I have been writing my name and number on the back of receipts for far too long, it is time to update my methods of correspondence.

Just as I was thinking about ordering some calling cards, I was contacted by Print Runner in regards to a give-away. At first I thought a printing company was too far out of what The Glamorous Housewife is about. Then I remembered the mommy business cards and realized this would be the perfect solution!

If you are interested in getting your own box of 2 by 3.5 business cards (they don't have to be 'mommy' cards), then be sure to enter this give-away! There are 250 cards to the set, 4 by 4 color on both sides, 14 pt UV coating and no rounded corners. This contest is only open for those of us who live in the United States, and you have to be 18 to enter. To enter all you need to do is like Print Runner on Facebook or follow them on Twitter. Then leave me a comment letting me know you entered. To enter a second time you need to tweet, Facebook, Pinterest, or blog about the contest. Then enter a SECOND message letting me know which one you did.

To  be clear, I will be receiving my own set of cards as well. This whole blogging experiment is really paying off!

Out of curiosity, I googled 'most expensive business card'. Turns out it is the $1500 Black Astrum card. See the sparkly dots on the card. Diamonds. Seriously. Here is a link to a news article about them.

So let the give-away begin! Good luck to all of my kittens- You can only enter until Monday, June 4th and the actual prize will be given on June 30th. I needed to run this contest early because I will be very busy at the end of the month.

Vintage Fashion: Everything Turquoise

Dolls, I was very excited when my home was featured in Country Living magazine. But nothing prepared me to know the sheer thrill of being today's story on House of Turquoise. I would say House of Turquoise is my number one favorite interior design blog. I used it extensively as I was decorating my home. Brimming with stunning photographs and information on designing your home, House of Turquoise can have you glancing at your watch and realizing you just spent two hours pouring over page after page of blue hued bliss. As a thank you, I have a few of my favorite turquoise fashion items which you kittens can 'ooh and ahh' over.

Lets start out with one of the most beautiful vintage dresses I have ever seen. This has been on my Pinterest forever and I will occasionally visit it from time to time. It has everything I adore in a dress: the color turquoise, a lively pattern, and rhinestones.

If you are ever looking for a pair of blue heels, then your first stop should be BHLDN. Because they are the wedding division of Anthropologie, they always have a stunning array of blue heels (due to the 'something borrowed, something blue' tradition). I think the bows on these are delightful.

Sometimes the only thing an outfit needs is a little pop of turquoise. I think this azure fascinator would perk up any little black dress.

And finally, any girl who loves all shades of blue will be wild about this vintage 1950s set of earrings and necklace.

Be sure to stop by House of Turquoise today, but leave plenty of time because you will be swept away by the gorgeousness of her blog. I have a feeling Pinterest is going to be very busy today.

What's The Word, Bird?

here

Hi dolls, happy Memorial Day Weekend! It has been quite a week here on The Glamorous Housewife. It started on Monday with my home being featured in Country Living. It continued with an idea for a Marie Antoinette party. And finally it ended with discussing some tips on loosing weight. Even with all of this I managed to find time to round up some fun links for your weekend.

Here is an article that confirms what we all knew to be true: the 1950s are the most attractive decade ever.

Here is a link to a wedding I thought was so beautiful. I adored all the handmade elements, and I especially loved the vintage feel.

I thought this post by the lovely Bonita was amazing. In it she discusses why she dresses in vintage and vintage inspired outfits. Her thoughts are exactly the same as mine! It was as if I had written it, only so much better.

And finally, here is an article that shows just how much larger our 'normal' portion sizes are today then in the 1950s. Isn't that shocking! No wonder so many of us struggle with weight.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend full of fun and excitement. It happens to be the Jewish holiday of Shavous so I will be eating my way through Friday night, Saturday and Sunday. I have not one, not two, but three different meals to attend! Such a busy girl! Let me know how you are spending your weekend in the comments.

Inspiration: Six Ways To Loose Weight Glamorously

I have never written about my diet or exercising habits here on The Glamorous Housewife. Mainly because this isn't a 'diet' blog and because I have never really had a weight 'problem'. I did gain about 20 pounds after my second child, and loosing the weight was what was inspired me to begin dressing the way I always wanted to dress- which is in vintage and vintage inspired garments, as well as the impetus to start this blog. I wasn't planning on having a third kid and I figured I would be at that size (around a 4-6) for years. Cut to 10 months after having a baby and I have about 15 pounds to loose if I am going to fit into any of my gorgeous summer dresses! Oy.

I happen to be pear shaped, which basically means I have great child-bearing hips and a 'juicy' butt. Though after this pregnancy, I seem to be storing weight around my middle as well. I know many of you see my photos and might think to yourselves, 'she doesn't need to loose weight'. And I see what you are thinking. But in order for me to feel better and, frankly, so I can wear my vintage clothing I spent a lot of time and money collecting, I would like to 'get healthy' again.

So far I have lost about 5 pounds and I thought you kittens might be interested in how I did it. You see, I don't follow a diet. I didn't start Atkins, or become vegan, or just eat cabbage soup. I just changed a few of my eating habits and that has made a big difference. So here are 6 ways I was able to rework my 'diet' in order to eat healthier and loose some weight.

1) Stop drinking soda.

I used to drink exactly one can of Coke every afternoon with lunch. Not Diet Coke, regular Coke. But I realized that was almost 200 calories for nothing. So I decided to try Diet Coke. Hated it. I tried Coke Zero. Hated it. Slowly I began to cut down on the amount of coke I was drinking. This wasn't something that changed over days, we are talking months. Then I tried substituting a cup of hot tea (I don't like coffee) with 2 tsp of sugar and some soy milk for the Coke. It worked! I found the caffeine to be enough and the tea filled me up in a way the Coke never did. So now, instead of soda I drink tea to get my caffeine in the afternoon. I even managed to wean myself off the sugar I used to mix in as well!

2) Stop eating chips at lunch.

I love a sandwich at lunch. Sometimes chicken, sometimes a fake chicken patty, sometimes cheese and avocado. The sandwiches varied, but I had to have a handful (or two) of chips to go with them. I knew these were also empty calories, so I started to wean myself of my chip addiction. First I would only put one handful on my plate. After time I tried to substitute something else like carrot sticks or apples. That was very unsatisfying so it didn't last long. Then I started only eating baked chips. And that worked for a while as well. Until one day I was out of chips (the horror!) and just grabbed two baby dill pickles. I checked the calories on the jar and it actually said there were zero calories! I ate one small pickle with one half of the sandwich and the other with the other half. I got the crunch, the salt, and the tang from the pickles and I have yet to buy another bag of potato chips! True story.

3) Snack on smoothies.

I make myself two smoothies every day. The first is in the morning after I do my cardio. The second is usually around 3:00 in the afternoon. Each one is pretty much the same- 8oz of water, half of a banana, around 3 frozen strawberries, 1/4 cup frozen blueberries, 1-2 handfuls of spinach, and sometimes I also add frozen mango. Then I blend and drink. I used to use protein powder, but I found it didn't seem to keep me fuller any longer then without, so why bother? This keeps me from getting too hungry and I like the fact it is just fruit and veggies. I could substitute a salad, but I find throwing things in a blender much easier.

4) Stop drinking wine every night.

This one has been by far the most difficult for me. I love wine. No seriously. I adore it. I look forward to that first glass while I am cooking dinner, and then I usually have another glass during dinner. My favorite is Sauvignon Blanc- the dry fruity liquid tastes like the nectar of the gds. *sigh. But that is also a ton of calories I don't need. I tried drinking less. But that didn't work because after one glass my willpower didn't kick in and I would inevitably pour a second. So the only thing that has worked for me is to not have it in the house, and then only have my two glasses on Friday night. After my two glasses I pour the rest of the bottle out. A waste of money? Yes. But I dont' buy expensive wine and I think it is worth it. Sometime a girl has got to do what a girl has got to do.

5) Park at the end of the parking lot and always take the stairs.

Normally I would make sure to get a parking spot as close as possible to the entrance of whatever building I was entering. Now I just park at the other end and walk. And I always choose to take stairs- never the elevator or escalator. Just tweaking this little thing helped in the 5 pounds I lost.

6)Find an exercise routine and stick to it.

When I had my first son I was so bored at home. I found a mommy/baby stroller exercise class and started going. I ended up going to that class for almost 4 years! Then life changed, my schedule changed, and I was back at work so I 'didn't have time' to exercise. That is when I gained the 20 pounds the first time. I only lost the weight by finding a new routine that worked for me. I joined a gym that was about a mile away and walked to it at least 4-5 times a week, then lifted weights at the gym and then walked back. That alone was enough for me to loose 20 pounds because at that time I was still able to drink the coke and eat the chips and maintain my 4-6 size frame.

Recently I have finally been able to add exercising back into my life. I put the baby in a jogging stroller and walk my 7 year old halfway to school. Then I power walk or run (occasionally stopping to lunge) for around 30 minutes. I have been doing this on and off for about a month, but I have found I haven't been loosing any more weight. So now I make sure to do this five days a week. After I get home from the walk, I drink a power shake, put the baby down for her nap, then do some weights. I focus on my shoulders, arms, and back three days a week and on my butt and legs twice a week. I am hoping that this new routine, combined by my tweaks in eating habits, will allow me to loose at least 5 more pounds by July.

As you can see, in each instance I started off by identifying a problem, tried to find ways to solve that problem and worked slowly to incorporate the solution into my lifestyle. It wasn't a crash diet, or something I could do for 3 months and then go back to my old habits. These were little tweaks that will sustain me for the rest of my life.

So what do you darlings think? Are there any tweaks you might be willing to make to your own eating habits? If so which ones? Are any of you interested in what I normally eat in a day? And how do you stay in shape? Let me know in the comments.

Entertaining: A Marie Antoinette Inspired Party

Have you seen the Marie Antoinette movie by Sophia Coppola? I adore it for all of its candy colored imagery. I thought it would fun to plan a party based on the movie. I think this theme is perfect for a wedding or baby shower. Can't you just imagine a room filled with women celebrating such a wonderful event?

It turns out I wasn't the first to have this brilliant idea. As I was looking for inspiration, I came across the lovely photo above. It was exactly what I would have planed. I adore the use of robin's egg blue, bright and pastel pink, and the feathers in the chandelier. Stunning.

In my research I also noticed pops of bright yellow, and being as I adore all things yellow, I would probably include that in my color chord as well.

Wouldn't these make lovely centerpieces? You could also use them as gifts for the guests of the party. Though there are many items here that can be considered 'Shabby Chic', the main difference is in the use of patterns. You want to stay away from large patterns with cabbage roses and stick to toile or tone on tone patterns.

Here is a little inspiration board full of goodies like plates, napkin rings, and other decor:

Marie Antoinette Party Inspiration

Most of these items are quite expensive, but you can find similar ones at Home Goods or any local thrift shop. You can also make both the floral napkin rings and the ruffled linens yourself!

Of course you have to have a new outfit to go with the party, right!

So are you inspired to have a Marie Antoinette inspired party any time soon? If so be sure to send me pictures so I can post them to my Facebook. For more party inspiration, check out my Pinterest board.

The Glamorous Housewife In Country Living Magazine

Well dolls, it is finally here! The new issue of Country Living has a feature on my home. Want to see a few snaps?

Here is the living room. They really did a lovely staging job. The couch is ours, the rest- not so much. But it looks beautiful!

To the right of the living room is our dining room. I have quite a large family and we often get together here and eat dinner together. My favorite part of the room is the wallpaper on the ceiling and the turquoise hutch. Notice the mirrored glass tile on the hutch.

To the right of the dining room is the kitchen with the eat in nook you see here. I have this nook decorated quite differently in shades of yellow and blue, not turquoise and blue, so it is fun to see it in a different way.

Here is our master bedroom, which is located upstairs. I wanted it to look like a tropical paradise, so I had all four walls wallpapered in this vintage looking palm motif. I had the floors stained navy blue which makes them look like water. I love laying on my bed with the french doors open, listening to the kids play outside while the palms seem to sway in the breeze.

All of these photos can be seen here.  I went ahead and took some photographs of other pictures in the magazine:

Here I am by the front door. You can see more pictures of the foyer here.

Above you can see our kid's bedroom. Toby, my 7 year old, and Ella, my baby, share a room. My other son Mason has taken over the 'guest nook' which you can see in the magazine. I think I will do a post just on the kid's bedroom because there is a lot more of it then the beds you see here. Plus you can see how I decorated it for both a boy and a girl.

Finally, you can see the family on the front porch. I spend an excessive amount of time on the porch because Ella is obsessed with being outside. I will be doing a blog post on our garden in a few days. Oh, by the way, the dress is from ModCloth and it is still available! Though you cant really see them, the shoes are the green Betsy by Miss L. Fire.

And that my darlings, is my home as depicted by Country Living! I had a wonderful time for the two days they were here shooting. I hope you all have a chance to check out the issue and see the glorious photographs in person.

To see the vintage style brunch I served the lovely people of Country Living, click here.

And for sources for almost everything in my home, you can click here. This includes items not seen in the magazine.

So what do you kittens think? Does it seem like somewhere The Glamorous Housewife would live? Which is your favorite room?
